Introduction
The solution is already providing substantial benefits for the company. Beyond the Numbers is a successful accountancy and business consultancy practice in Edinburgh, which offers a range of services to businesses and individuals. Hosted Accountants provide virtual hosted desktops and IT support to accountants across the UK, enabling clients to access a wide range of practice software from wherever they are, flexibly and instantly, whether using laptops, iPad, or regular desktops.
Background
Beyond the Numbers had recently moved its practice over to the Digita professional suite and Managing Director, Val Wishart, was keen to implement cloud computing in order to accommodate staff requests for home working and to enable access to accounting packages from multiple locations. Hosted Accountants were recommended to Val, who contacted them to find out more. “I was keen to find a more flexible approach to working for my staff and myself,” explains Val. “The previous set up meant that staff couldn’t work from outside the office, and I
wanted to change this. We chose the hosted desktop solution from Hosted Accountants because of their industry experience and glowing recommendations and we were immediately impressed by their understanding of what we wanted to achieve.”
Hosted Desktop Solution
After establishing Beyond the Numbers’ requirements, Hosted Accountants started to roll out the hosted desktop solution in November 2011, migrating the Thomson Reuters (Digita) suite and other compliance applications to the hosted desktop platform. “The deployment took place during a really busy period for the company, and it all went really smoothly – there was absolutely no disruption to the practice. We were very impressed with Hosted Accountants,” says Val. “They understood our requirements really quickly and were able to get on with the project.”
When deployed, Hosted Accountants’ solution frees users from the confines of working at the office, enabling them to access their hosted desktops and applications from wherever they are. The solution provides safety and security, as well as improving efficiency and flexibility. “I rely on my laptop for my work,” explains Val. “Previously - and with other programmes I use - I had to synchronise my laptop with the server each time I came into and left the office. This obviously takes up time that I don’t really have. Equally, I don’t really want to be carrying all my data on my laptop when I am out of the office. Now, we are using the hosted desktop, I can access all my client information wherever I am, and no longer waste time synchronising with the server.”
The Future - moving the entire practice to a hosted desktop
Beyond the Numbers has found the solution to be intuitive and flexible; as Val explains: “My intention was to trial the solution to see how we got on, but we are so pleased with it, I have no doubt that we will roll out all our software on a hosted desktop. It makes sense to eventually move everything off the server and into cloud.”
